Changing It Up

Two year ago, I started this blog with the intention of sharing my technology knowledge. About a month and a half later, I was hired to teach 5th grade math, science and social studies and around November 2017, I let my blog go by the wayside.  You may ask why the change in the blog name? Well, right when I started my blog, I also joined the Teacher Instagram community and a year later moved schools, districts and grade levels (even cities) and began teaching 4th grade math and science. As I've reflected on who I am as a teacher, what I value and how I've grown as a teacher, I've realized I wanted a more reflective name. I am a huge fan of using flair pens and am an avid coffee drinker, so the name Flair Pens and Lattes was born this past spring (originally done to be the name of a TpT store, but I do not have the design knowledge to sell products on Teachers Pay Teachers yet).

After attending the National Get Your Teach On Conference in Dallas and connecting with amazing educators who just get me and have the same passion for teaching I do, I knew I wanted to share more. I remember Rachel Hollis asking us in her keynote to think of a goal we had. I couldn't think of one until just a couple of days ago when I remembered how much I loved writing and wanted to write in some fashion. It was at that moment, I knew I had to revive the blog as I begin prepping for this upcoming school year and another class of wonderful fourth graders. I'm so excited to share all things teaching (and some technology too!)

Going Google, Part 1

Is there a teacher who hasn't used Google in some way? I don't think so. I think everyone knows how to use Google Drive and has used Google Docs. Everyone knows how to use it, but today I'm talking about how I've used it in my classroom. I have been using Google for pretty much everything since freshman year of college.  I say pretty much everything because I did use Microsoft Word for my class newsletter template and some signs for my classroom. I'm fortunate that I learned to use Google Drive at the beginning of college so I had no problem transitioning to student teaching and then teaching in a GAFE district where students had personal gmail accounts from the time they enter kindergarten to their graduation. In college, I used it to type term papers (I never dealt with a computer crashing and if I had, my documents would have been safe), sorority meeting minutes, suggested that we use Google forms for our master recruitment list when I was my sorority's recru...

Creating with Canva

Today, I spent some time creating with the free iPad app Canva so it seemed like the perfect app to talk about on the blog today! When I first learned about Canva during an iPadpalooza 2015, I was not a big fan of it. Though I created a few things with it, I got frustrated. I didn't think it was user friendly. When I re-visited the app this past Saturday at the ISTE HackEd Smackdown session, I decided to give it a second chance. First things first-- Canva is a graphic design tool. I prefer to use the iPad app, but you can also design online. When you log onto Canva, you can choose from a variety of templates--social media, instagram post, poster, blog graphic, facebook cover, photo college, Pinterest graphic, business card and so many more. When I began designing the Facebook and Twitter cover for this blog, I chose the Facebook Cover. After choosing your template you can choose your layout, background and add text. Some of the backgrounds require you to pay for them but most ...

First Month Update

It's been about a month since I've blogged. August and September is always busy, plus I'm learning three new sets of standards and I'm the only 5th grade math/science/social studies teacher so I've been planning a lot alone. Things have started to become less hectic as I've gotten in the groove of planning, prepping and grading again, so I thought I'd give you an update. But first, a little story. All weekend, I did not want to go to school for the first time since I was in Boerne. Not only was I at school until 7:30 pm Friday night (a decision that I highly regret and will not make again), but I also had two parent conferences after school (one planned, one unplanned). One parent highly intimidated me and the other one was about a child in my class who struggles. Not only does this student struggle, but he or she wants to achieve as highly as my GT students, but hesitates to ask questions because of embarrassment. My teacher heart broke when my students w...
