About

I'm Elle and I love kids and teaching more than anything (except maybe my husband Grant and my family). I've taught second grade, 5th grade math/science/social and am now moving districts to teach 4th grade ELAR and Social Studies in Marble Falls ISD!

During my year teaching sixth grade ELA, I began to love writing. I even had my own students blog! I love using technology when I teach as it's a great way to engage students and showcase their work. I'm always learning about new apps and websites so I'm using this blog as a way to share! Formerly, this blog was known as Embracing Educational Technology, but as I've gained more teaching experience, become part of the Teacher Instagram community, and developed professionally, I realized I had much more to share. I've taken the last four years off from blogging because teaching was so overwhelming, but I am excited to revive the blog!

Other things about me:

I most currently taught 2nd grade for three years and am moving districts to teach 4th grade!

I got married in September 2021 to my amazing husband.

In San Antonio, I was part of the children's ministry team at my church where I  formed amazing relationships with our littlest members and their sweet parents!

I majored in theatre in college and love musical theatre. Arts education is something I truly value and I support the arts whenever I can. I love going to musicals at the Majestic and other area theatres.

I am a proud two-time Trinity Tiger alum and was a member of the San Antonio Chapter Alumni Association board.

I was part of the best sorority at Trinity and am proud to be the Founding President of our Alumnae Council started in August 2016.

I can talk about education all day long. Especially if it involves educational technology.

Going to the gym five-six days a week is important to me. I try to stay healthy and have been an avid gym goer for the last 14 years.

I have a sweet cat named Chloe, who was rescued five years ago while I was living in San Antonio.

Creating with Canva

Today, I spent some time creating with the free iPad app Canva so it seemed like the perfect app to talk about on the blog today! When I first learned about Canva during an iPadpalooza 2015, I was not a big fan of it. Though I created a few things with it, I got frustrated. I didn't think it was user friendly. When I re-visited the app this past Saturday at the ISTE HackEd Smackdown session, I decided to give it a second chance. First things first-- Canva is a graphic design tool. I prefer to use the iPad app, but you can also design online. When you log onto Canva, you can choose from a variety of templates--social media, instagram post, poster, blog graphic, facebook cover, photo college, Pinterest graphic, business card and so many more. When I began designing the Facebook and Twitter cover for this blog, I chose the Facebook Cover. After choosing your template you can choose your layout, background and add text. Some of the backgrounds require you to pay for them but most ...

First Month Update

It's been about a month since I've blogged. August and September is always busy, plus I'm learning three new sets of standards and I'm the only 5th grade math/science/social studies teacher so I've been planning a lot alone. Things have started to become less hectic as I've gotten in the groove of planning, prepping and grading again, so I thought I'd give you an update. But first, a little story. All weekend, I did not want to go to school for the first time since I was in Boerne. Not only was I at school until 7:30 pm Friday night (a decision that I highly regret and will not make again), but I also had two parent conferences after school (one planned, one unplanned). One parent highly intimidated me and the other one was about a child in my class who struggles. Not only does this student struggle, but he or she wants to achieve as highly as my GT students, but hesitates to ask questions because of embarrassment. My teacher heart broke when my students w...

Going Google, Part 1

Is there a teacher who hasn't used Google in some way? I don't think so. I think everyone knows how to use Google Drive and has used Google Docs. Everyone knows how to use it, but today I'm talking about how I've used it in my classroom. I have been using Google for pretty much everything since freshman year of college.  I say pretty much everything because I did use Microsoft Word for my class newsletter template and some signs for my classroom. I'm fortunate that I learned to use Google Drive at the beginning of college so I had no problem transitioning to student teaching and then teaching in a GAFE district where students had personal gmail accounts from the time they enter kindergarten to their graduation. In college, I used it to type term papers (I never dealt with a computer crashing and if I had, my documents would have been safe), sorority meeting minutes, suggested that we use Google forms for our master recruitment list when I was my sorority's recru...
